Safety of Nucleare Waste Management

Decentralised interim storage facilities

Until a repository for heat-generating waste will be taken into operation, this waste must be safely stored intermediately. In Germany, spent fuel elements from the operation of research and power reactors are stored in central interim storage facilities and in on-site interim storage facilities.

    Sites and occupancy

The nuclear power plant operators’ obligation to ensure the interim storage of the spent fuel elements originating from their operation at the nuclear power plant sites has been laid down in the amendment to the Atomic Energy Act of April 2002.

    Design

The on-site interim storage facilities were constructed as storage halls from steel concrete (at the Neckarwestheim site in the form of storage tunnels). Three different concepts were used for the construction of the storage halls: the STEAG, the WTI and the tunnel concept.

  • Mass of heavy metal applied for and licensed

Decentralised interim storage facilities for radioactive waste were constructed at the nuclear power plant sites or nearby. The capacities of these interim storage facilities are given in tons of heavy metal.
