Transport - Storage - Surveillance of Radioactive Waste

Safety of Nucleare Waste Management

Central interim storage facilities

Two central transport cask storage facilities (TBL) have been installed in storage halls made of reinforced concrete at the sites of Ahaus (North Rhine-Westphalia) and Gorleben (Lower Saxony). The Nord interim storage facility located near Lubmin in the borough of Rubenow (Lubmin authority) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a facility for treating and storing all types of radioactive waste.

A licence for the storage of high-level radioactive vitrified waste block containers being returned from the AREVA NC reprocessing plant in France (former COGEMA) has only been granted for the Gorleben TBL. The TBL Ahaus not only stores spent power reactor fuel elements but also spent fuel elements originating from research reactors.

  • Gorleben interim storage facility

The Gorleben Transport Cask Storage Facility (TBL) is used for storing nuclear fuel in the form of spent fuel elements from light water reactors as well as HAW vitrified waste block containers (vitrified high-level radioactive waste from the reprocessing of German fuel elements). The operators are now planning to store MAW vitrified waste block containers (vitrified intermediate-level radioactive waste from the reprocessing of German fuel elements) at the Gorleben TBL in future. The facility is located in the borough of Gorleben (Lüchow-Dannenberg district), some two kilometres south of Gorleben and is managed by the GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH (GNS).

  • Central Interim Storage Facility Ahaus

The Transport Cask Storage Facility (TBL) Ahaus is a storage facility for the storage of nuclear fuels and other radioactive materials. The storage facility is situated in the area of the town of Ahaus (Western Münsterland), approximately 3 kilometres to the east of the town centre. It is operated by GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH.

  • Interim storage facility North (near Lubmin)

The Interim Storage Facility North (ZLN) is a facility for the treatment and storage of all types of radioactive waste which is situated in the community of Rubenow in the rural district of Ostvorpommern (federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). It is situated immediately by the premises of the decommissioned nuclear power plants Greifswald, Lubmin (formerly VEB Kombinat Kernkraftwerk Bruno Leuschner) and is operated by Zwischenlager Nord GmbH, a 100-per cent daughter of Entsorgungswerk für Nuklearanlagen GmbH. The latter is owned by the federation at 100 per cent (represented by the Federal Ministry of Finance) and is the largest federal holder of radioactive waste.
