Precautions and emergency response

German nuclear power plants are protected against various possible events. This includes precautions against power failure and earthquakes, for example.

Emergency measures are in place in case of an event that had not been anticipated before as a design basis accident, and against which the nuclear power plant is not designed. In-plant emergency measures are intended to control and avert beyond-design-basis events, or to mitigate the effects on the environment. If the on-site emergency measures are not sufficient, off-site emergency protection measures are to reduce the radiation exposure of human beings.
