The Länder Committee for Nuclear Energy (LAA) is a permanent Federation-Länder Committee composed of representatives of the nuclear Länder licensing and supervisory authorities and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (Bundesminsterium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, Bau und Reaktorsicherheit - BMUB). Its task is

  • to prepare and co-ordinate the activities of the Federation and the Länder relating to the execution of the Atomic Energy Act,
  • to prepare amendments and further develop legal and administrative provisions along with the secondary regulations, and
  • to develop regulations for a standardised handling of nuclear law in order to ensure uniform execution throughout Germany to the greatest possible extent.

Technical committees have been allocated to the Committee, among others the Technical Committee for Nuclear Safety (Fachausschuss Reaktorsicherheit - FA RS).

Regarding the topic "Nuclear Safety", the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (Bundesamt für Kerntechnische Entsorgungssicherheit, BfE) has a permanent representative in the FA RS and in three working groups assigned to FA RS:

  • Working Group Supervision of Nuclear Power Plant Operation,
  • Working Group Decommissioning and
  • Working Group Research Reactors.
