Decommissioning of nuclear facilities
The Atomic Energy Act requires nuclear power plants which are no longer licenced for power operation to be decommissioned and dismantled immediately. However, it is not only power reactors that are decommissioned at the end of their operating life. Other types of nuclear facilities with a licence under the Atomic Energy Act (e.g. Section 7 or Section 9 AtG), such as prototype and research reactors or nuclear supply and disposal facilities will also reach the end of their operating phase, and will ultimately be decommissioned and shut down. Depending on the type and purpose of the facility, there may be considerable differences in the nature and quantity of radionuclides present in the facility. Preparation for decommissioning includes recording the radionuclides and plant components present, planning the dismantling sequence, and determining the decontamination and dismantling techniques to be used for the individual plant components.
